How to wash your doona for a fresh, luxurious sleep

Most of us have a cleaning routine. We clean the kitchen bench every night, wash the sheets and doona cover weekly, and regularly wash and dry clean our clothes.

How often do you include cleaning your doona in your routine?

According to the University of Western Australia’s Centre for Sleep Science, we spend one-third of our lives sleeping. [1] It’s important that our bedding – including our cosy doona – is clean, soft, and fresh.

In this guide from LookSmart Alterations, let’s look into why you should clean your doona at least twice a year and the best way to do it. We’ve also included five expert tips for an added touch of luxury.

The health benefits of a clean doona

A clean doona is essential for your peace of mind and helps you and your family avoid a number of hidden health risks.

If anyone in your home suffers from allergies or is prone to developing them, dust mites can burrow into your doona and cause serious health issues, including wheezing, asthma, or skin rashes. [2]

Washing your doona regularly in quality laundry detergent will kill dust mites and wash away the allergen they produce, helping to keep allergies at bay.

A clean doona (and bed sheets) can also help improve your skin. An unclean doona might be the cause of unwanted acne or skin rashes. [3] Something as simple as washing your doona can help give your skin a new lease on life.

How to wash a doona

Washing a doona at home is a straightforward process if you follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Check the care label

Each doona comes with a how-to guide in the form of a care label. Look along the edges of your doona to find yours. When you discover what your doona is made from, you’ll be able to determine the best way to clean it.

Here are some common materials and suggestions for washing doonas.

Cotton
Wash on a gentle cycle in warm or cold water with a mild laundry detergent. Avoid washing in hot water, as it will shrink the fabric.

Wool
Hand washing in a bathtub with a wool-friendly detergent using cold water will prevent shrinking and felting. Most wool doonas are not machine-friendly unless specifically stated on the care label.

Feathers and down
Machine wash only in a front-loading washing machine in a cold or warm wash with gentle detergent. Do not use fabric softeners.

Polyester
Machine wash on a warm, gentle cycle. Synthetic fibres, like polyester, are particularly forgiving and quick-drying compared to doonas with natural fillings.

Dry clean only
If your care label prescribes dry cleaning only, you’ll want to abide by this to prevent shrinking or destroying the structural integrity of your doona.

Other reasons to dry clean your doona include:

  • If it’s made of silk or cashmere;
  • If you don’t have the time or resources
  • to handwash a wool doona;
  • If you have a heavily filled doona that won’t fit comfortably in your washer.

Step 2: Choose the right washing method

The size of your washing machine will determine whether or not you can clean your doona at home. If your washer is too small for your doona size, you’ll risk crowding the doona, which can lead to the flooding of your machine or your doona not being washed properly.

Here’s a helpful guide to what size washer you need for each doona size.

Single (140×210 cm) 7kgs
Double (180×210 cm) 8-9kgs
Queen (210×210 cm) 9-10kgs
King (240×210 cm) 10-12kgs
Super King (270×240 cm) 12+ (commercial-sized washer)

If your doona is made from delicate materials like wool, linen, or bamboo, handwashing will be the best way to clean it without causing any damage.

Sometimes it’s best to leave the cleaning to the experts. If you have any questions or concerns, speak with the experts at your nearest LookSmart store.

Whether you’re dealing with delicate fibres (like wool, silk, or cashmere), you don’t have time to wash and dry it at home, or you’re unsure if your washing machine is big enough for the doona, leave it in our capable hands. Getting a professional clean guarantees you’ll have a fresh, cosy doona ready to slip into at the end of the day.

Step 3: Drying your doona for best results

Most people want to know if you should line dry or machine dry a doona. Here’s what we recommend for maximum cleanliness and fluffiness.

Line drying
Line drying is best for doonas with natural fibres, such as wool, silk, bamboo, and down. You’ll want to lay it over your clothesline in direct sunlight, flipping it every few hours to make sure it dries completely.

In colder months, airflow should still dry your doona. If it’s raining, bring your doona inside and place it on a drying rack near (but not too close to) a heat source. Running a dehumidifier will help it to dry.

Machine drying
Machine drying is safe for synthetic doonas, and some doonas are made from cotton or down. You’ll want to run the dryer on low heat for up to three hours, checking on it every 30 minutes.

Refer to the care instructions before you machine dry your doona to be sure. For some fabrics, a machine dry will prevent mildew and keep your doona fluffy.

Dryer balls make drying a doona much easier as they prevent clumping and help promote airflow, which speeds up the drying process.

How to store your doona properly

When your doona isn’t on a bed, you’ll want to keep it somewhere it can stay fresh. If you want to store it in a bag, use a cotton one so airflow can still circulate.

You’ll also want to store your doona somewhere cool and dry. This is often in a linen cupboard, but it could also be under a bed in a bag or at the top of your wardrobe. Cedar blocks are a great way to keep your doona smelling crisp and prevent any potential pests like moths.

Keeping your doona fresh between washes

Even if you’re storing your doona in a bag made of breathable material, it’s still advisable to periodically air out your doona. Putting your doona outside in the sun at least twice a year will help keep it clean and fresh.

Five tips to make your doona even cosier

Everyone loves the feeling of freshly washed sheets. To have an even better experience with your freshly washed doona, here are our five favourite tips to add a touch of luxury.

1. Use a high-end laundry detergent like a mild, fragrance-free wool wash or a silk-safe formula.

2. Choose detergent with a hint of lavender for relaxation or eucalyptus for antibacterial properties to add a sophisticated, spa-like feel.

3. Add a few drops of lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood essential oil to the rinse cycle while washing or to your dryer balls to give your doona a divine smell.

4. If your doona isn’t dirty but needs a little freshening up, use a steamer to kill bacteria and remove odour between washes.

5. Lightly mist your doona with a crisp fabric spray before making the bed.

Summing up

If you take care of your doona, it will keep you cosy for years to come. The lifetime of your doona depends on how well you care for it. With proper maintenance, a high-quality doona is a great investment that can last 10 years or longer.

When you wash your doona according to its material and care instructions, you’ll keep it clean and fresh, cultivating a luxurious environment for rest and relaxation. You’ll also be able to avoid common pitfalls like ruining the structure of your doona, breaking down the fibres or causing mildew.

For doonas that require professional dry cleaning, you can trust the experts at LookSmart. Our expert team knows how to clean your doona with care and precision, preserving its quality.

FAQs

How often should you clean your doona?

At least twice a year. However, if you live in a hot climate, sweat a lot, or are prone to allergies, you should consider washing it every three to four months.

How do I wash my pillows?

Here’s some good news: You can follow these same steps to wash your pillows, too. Pillows are also at risk of harbouring dust mites and mildew, so remember to change them out and wash them every three to four months.

Should I use fabric softener on my doona?

It’s best not to use fabric softeners on your doona. They typically won’t have much of an effect on it, and fabric softeners can leave a residue that collects dust and dirt. Overall, it’s not worth using fabric softener when you clean your doona.

What Should I Do With An Old School Uniform? https://www.looksmartalterations.com.au/how-to-reuse-old-school-uniforms/ Wed, 05 Mar 2025 12:46:25 +0000 https://www.looksmartalterations.com.au/?p=17651 Create a show-stopping look to rival the fireworks this New Year’s Eve. The post What Should I Do With An Old School Uniform? first appeared on LookSmart.

It’s a big moment – your child or teenager no longer needs their school uniform. Perhaps they’re graduating or embarking on a new adventure at a different school. Whatever the occasion, this new chapter often raises the question – what to do with old school uniforms?

It can often feel wrong to simply throw them away. Not only are there strong memories attached to that uniform, but many uniforms (or pieces of uniforms) still have a lot of life left in them.

Here at LookSmart, we believe that high-quality alterations, tailoring, and repairs can breathe new life into old garments, prolonging their life and usability. We’re sharing tips on how you can reuse, repurpose, or responsibly recycle your child’s school uniform.

Five ways to reuse old school uniforms

When it comes to reusing your child’s old or outgrown school uniform, you can be as practical or as creative as you like, depending on your preference, time, and budget. Here are five ways you can repurpose old school uniforms.

1. Alter the school uniform

If your child will still be using the school uniform but has outgrown it, or if a complete uniform is being handed down to another child, altering the school uniform to fit is the easiest and most cost-effective way of extending its life. A professional tailor can work magic, finding length in the seams to adjust the uniform to fit your growing child, or taking in material without adding uncomfortable bulk.

Adjust the length and size of the sleeves. Hem pants and skirts to allow for growth. Taper in or let out the waistline on dresses so that they are comfortable.

A well-tailored uniform that is clean and in good repair will help your child approach the school year with confidence, making a good first impression. It will also save you money (and help save the environment) by using the uniform you have, rather than purchasing a new one.

2. Alter pieces of the school uniform

Many parents of school-age children encounter this conundrum: certain pieces of their child’s school uniform are in good condition, but others are worn out or beyond repair. This often happens when the school uniform is handed down from one child to their younger sibling.

For LookSmart’s expert tailors, this is no problem. We can repair or patch items that need to be mended and fit others to size, shortening (or lengthening), tapering, and hemming pants, skirts, dresses, and sleeves, and making the uniform clean and comfortable for the next owner.

It’s important for your child to feel their uniform is theirs, and not a hand-me-down. Getting it professionally altered and repaired so it looks as good as new will help their confidence, at a fraction of the cost of replacing an entire school uniform.

3. Donate the school uniform

Donating school uniforms is a great way to repurpose and reuse them, saving them from landfill.

You may have family or friends with children who attend the same school who might appreciate preloved uniforms (or parts of it). Some schools also offer a uniform exchange program, either officially or through Facebook pages organised by parents. Another option is to check if second-hand stores near the school accept preloved uniforms. (Many of them do, offering parents a budget-friendly option for purchasing uniforms.)

If you’re donating to charity, it’s a lovely idea to take your school uniform to a professional tailor to have it cleaned and repaired before gifting it to a new owner. If you’re picking up a school uniform second-hand, a professional tailor can alter it to fit your child so they can start their school year in comfort and feeling great.

4. Recycle the school uniform

According to SBS World News, Australian schools send around 2,000 tonnes of uniforms to landfill every year. [1]

Recycling old school uniforms is a smart way to reduce textile waste and help your community (and the environment) by being a part of the circular economy. Start with your local recycling centre and ask if they accept textiles and clothing donations. Be sure to check if they have any special uniform recycling requirements, such as removing zips and buttons and/or cleaning the clothing prior to recycling it.

In addition, look into organisations like Worn Up, which transforms old school uniforms into new products that can be used by students, such as school desks.

5. Transform the school uniform into something creative

School uniforms carry memories. If reusing your child’s school uniform isn’t an option, think about upcycling it into something creative.

Why should you repurpose old school uniforms?

Although it might seem easier to simply buy new, there are a number of reasons why you should repurpose old school uniforms.

Most school uniforms can be repaired and repurposed

Your expert LookSmart tailor can provide you with options and advice. You’ll be amazed at what they can do!

It will save you money

Investing in repairs is usually much more cost-effective than buying new.

The environment will thank you

Around the world, every second of the day, the equivalent of a rubbish truck-load of unwanted clothing is buried or burnt in landfills, according to the Australia Institute. And Australia is the second largest consumer of clothing in the world per capita, rivalling the United States. [2]

High-quality alterations and repairs aren’t only for school uniforms. If you’ve bought something at a secondhand store or online, or if you have an old favourite that needs a little love and attention, bring it to us. We can tailor it to fit flawlessly, mend rips, add embroidery, and more. Check out our range of services or stop by your local LookSmart store and speak with one of our helpful team members.

Summing up

What to do with an old school uniform? There are many different options for reusing, repurposing, responsibly recycling, or upcycling your child’s school uniform. It all depends on whether you’re looking to reuse the entire uniform (or parts of it), recycle or donate it, or transform it into something creative.

Let us help. At LookSmart, we provide high-quality alterations and tailoring services that complement your unique body shape and size. Speak to us about what you’d like to achieve and we’ll make it happen.

FAQS

How long does it take to alter school uniforms?

It depends on how extensive and intricate the alterations are, as well as the current level of demand.

If you need a fast turnaround time, enquire about our Express Service. We’ll complete your alterations in 24 hours or less. (Additional charges apply.)

Should I wash a school uniform before taking it to be altered?

It’s helpful to wash the uniform at least once before taking it to one of our expert tailors for alterations. If the school uniform is made of material that will shrink in the wash, that should happen before the uniform is altered in any way.

How do I find a tailor near me?

It’s easy! LookSmart has more than 135 locations around Australia. Visit the store locator on our website to find your nearest LookSmart tailor.

Whether it’s your first time having clothes altered or you’re a seasoned suit shaper, there are some simple insider tips you can learn that will make a visit to the tailor smoother and your suit alterations more successful.

1. Know your tailor

Knowing your tailor comes through research and recommendations. Learn about their experience, reliability, and quality of service. You can understand this better by looking at their site and reading reviews.

At LookSmart Alterations, we take pride in giving you fast, courteous, inexpensive tailoring – with a level of quality that’s gained the respect of leading fashion retailers, the corporate world and close to a million satisfied customers. Through finely detailed custom tailoring and a trained understanding of fashion and styling, we focus on ensuring the perfect fit.

2. Give a courtesy call

Most tailors welcome you to drop in for a quick fitting. That said, it’s always appreciated to receive a courtesy call at least 30 minutes before your arrival.

Pinning and tucking different garments can vary in terms of how long it takes. For example, a 3 piece suit will take much longer than a pair of pants. Quality tailoring takes time, and to save yours, we recommend booking ahead.

3. Check for Suit Symmetry Post-Adjustments

A proper fit can make all the differences between various suits, which can change your look and confidence level to a great extent. All these special occasions-weddings, job interviews, or formal affairs-require tailored adjustments to ensure you portray the perfect appearance.

Off-the-rack suits are altered according to each body’s form and style. We have compiled ten tips to guide you through changing a suit, from choosing the right tailor to checking for symmetry after adjustments.

4. Consider Seasonal Weight Fluctuations

Weight can change due to many causes, such as a change of season or other lifestyle changes. So, when having your suit tailored, you should consider such changes and speak with your tailor.

Also, counsel them to ensure they have some excess fabric for parts such as the waist or pants. This will allow you to make alterations in the future as your body shapes up. The idea will save you much money and time after completing the suit.
Your suit will handle the changes that come with aging quite well, which means it will be quite comfortable.

5. Adjust the Collar for Proper Balance

The collar of your suit is a critical component of its overall look. It should lie flat against your neck without any gaps or bunching, as this creates an unflattering silhouette. When fitting the collar, ensure it complements the shape of your face and enhances your overall appearance.

If your collar doesn’t sit properly, it can affect the rest of the suit, giving it an unfinished appearance. Discuss your preferences with your tailor to achieve a balanced collar fit that elevates your style, ensuring you look polished and professional in any setting.

6. Bring Your Suit Shoes

When having your suit pants tailored, always bring the shoes you plan to wear. The height of your boots significantly influences the appropriate length for your pants. Tailoring the length of your trousers without your shoes can lead to awkward or mismatched lengths that detract from the overall appearance of your suit.

Having your tailor measure the pants while wearing your shoes ensures a perfect fit that maintains the sleek, sophisticated look you desire. This simple step enhances your comfort and elevates your style for a polished appearance.

7. Be prepared for suit alterations

Whatever it is that you’re having altered – be it a suit jacket, tux pants, or a dress shirt – bring all the basic items you’re planning to wear with it to the fitting. This is especially relevant when hemming garments, as length depends on the type of shoes you are going to wear with it.

For repairs, bring along the repair kit the manufacturer may have supplied when purchasing your garment. Men’s suits usually come with an extra swatch of material, a button, and some thread supplied in the back pocket of the pants or the interior pocket of the jacket. If not, most garments with buttons will at least have a spare sewn on the inside near the care label.

8. Know the language of suit alterations

It’s safe to say that the fashion industry employ a vernacular of their own – similar to how doctors have their own medical jargon. Knowing some of the terms will help you to accurately describe what it is you’re after from your alteration.

Here are 4 sewing terms to get you started.

Darts: A fold of fabric is sewn into the garment to create shape, commonly to fit the waist and bust.

Vents: Vents refer to the slit located near the tail of the jacket.

Inseam: The seam along the inside of the pant leg from the bottom crotch to the lower ankle.

Taper: Taper is the narrowing of pants towards the ankle rather than a straight or bell-shaped end.

9. Know what’s in style

Following the current trends of suiting will help to determine whether or not you’re asking for something appropriate.

4 current suit trends include:

  1. Allowing shirt cuffs between ¼” and ½” in length showing.
  2. Pant breaks should be kept to little or no break, so the pant flows seamlessly into the shoe with just a little extra fabric draping over.
  3. Jackets should be kept slim-fitting, with only the slightest hint of tugging at the front when buttoned.
  4. Pants should be slim and flattering, with a slight taper to your ankles.
  5. If you’re unsure, we work across a variety of corporate accounts at LookSmart Alterations and go out of our way to stay up-to-date with styles. With our knowledge and experience, we are confident we can give you the perfect look and fit.

10. Know your basic measurement

Non-custom suits are measured by the wearer’s chest and come in three separate dimensions: short, regular and long. Knowing where you sit in this basic form of measurement will allow you to start with a jacket that requires the least amount of tailoring. The closer fit you start with, the easier the finished product will be.

11. Pay attention

Having a tailor tinker around you might seem like a good opportunity to catch up on your emails, but pay attention to what is happening. It’s easier to move a pin than it is to open a seam, so speaking up as your tailor works their magic is important. If you’d like something tighter or looser, longer or shorter, let them know.

12. Listen to your tailor

If you’re insecure about certain parts of your body, you’re not alone. Most men and women dislike something about themselves, be it their height, their broad shoulders, or any bulges. You might think you know the secrets to hiding these less-than-desired areas of your body, but chances are you are doing yourself a disservice by choosing something that doesn’t fit you right.

Some common mistakes include shorter people wearing longer jackets thinking it will make them look taller, when in actual fact, it does the opposite. A similar thing happens with heavier people who often want baggier suits, assuming it will make them look slimmer, but again, this is not the case.

Your tailor fits different body shapes every single day, so listen to their advice. They know what secrets really work, so trust them.

13. Keep an allowance for suit alterations

A big fear when getting a suit altered is that too snug a fit means you can’t fluctuate in weight at all. This is not true. When you keep an allowance of one inch on all seams, you’re actually allowing your suit to be let out one full size.

No one wants to spend hundreds or thousands on a suit only to grow out of it following a Christmas eating binge, so give yourself some room to grow.

14. Try it on, again

Always double check your alterations and repairs before leaving the store. Ask to try your suit on again and if it’s not what you envisioned, say so.

Most tailors will be able to tweak your garment then and there if need be and at no additional cost. This will save you time and the hassle of bringing your suit back.

Bonus tip… look for a guarantee on your suit alterations

Putting on a great suit is transformative – your shoulders are broadened, your lines longer and leaner, your waist trimmer… you look great and feel great. It pays to get your suit altered to the perfect fit, as nothing feels worse than a bad one.

Choosing a tailor that offers a satisfaction guarantee gives you peace of mind that your altered or repaired suit will be exactly as you envisioned. If you’re not happy with the results, a guarantee will ensure your garment is altered again for free.

At LookSmart Alterations, our guarantee means that if you’re still not satisfied, we will return 110% of your money back. We will even pay for your garment/s to be altered at a tailor of your choice! Frequently Asked Questions

A suit can easily be altered several times, depending on the fabric and the changes that must be made. Here are a few general guidelines:

  • Minor Adjustments: Several minor adjustments can be made without issue, like taking a hem of trousers or reducing waist size. As many as two sizes can typically alter trousers and shirts.
  • Major Alterations: This includes structural changes like adjusting the shoulder or sleeves. These can only be performed once or twice and could influence how the entire suit is constructed. The suit jacket, in particular, can generally only be altered by one size.
  • Wear and Tear: Any modification process involves cutting and sewing, which leads to wear and tear over time. If too many alterations are made to the wardrobe. It loses its original form.
  • Type of Fabric: The nature of the fabric may determine further how many alterations to a suit can be done. The heavier the nature, the sturdier it is than the lighter one.

Generally, you need to see some experienced tailor shops, like LookSmart Alterations, for advice on a specific type of suit and the likely further alterations.

You can opt for a suit that is well-fitting in the shoulders and chest, even if it leaves a little extra space in other areas. This allows you to make alterations without unduly upsetting the garment’s structure.

Of course, there is a better fit between the shoulders and the chest, providing a solid foundation for adjusting the waist and length. By design, an ill-fitting suit will only allow the tailor a little free play without compromising the suit’s shape.

Investing in a well-fitting suit upfront ensures a more polished and tailored look, enhancing your confidence and comfort in any professional setting.

Most mistakes consist of misaligned sleeves, poorly set collars, and forgetting the height of the shoes that pants hemming involves. All these can make the rest of the suit look less than what is expected.

Always communicate clearly what you want to avoid this kind of problem; for instance, tell how you want the sleeves to fall and how the collar should sit on your neck. You may also take the shoes you intend to wear during the fitting so that your pants are just about perfect in length.

The time taken to alter the suit may range from a few days to one week, depending on how busy the tailor is and the complexity of the alteration required. Two working days are enough for simple tailoring procedures, such as hemming trousers or raising sleeves.

More time-consuming changes, like a jacket fit or shoulder reconstruction, may require longer. Surely, it is always a good thing to visit your tailor to estimate how long it may take and let him have some preview of what’s about to happen so you’d need it. Then, he’ll be able to tell you the exact prioritisation so that he gets you prepared on time before that special occasion.

There’s nothing quite like kicking off the morning with a sweaty workout and heading to work feeling energised and ready for the day. But there’s nothing worse than arriving in the office wearing a crumpled shirt that completely takes away from your fresh face and well-earned liveliness.

Don’t worry—we’ve got some great tips for keeping your clothes fresh in your gym bag so you can get the benefit of working out and still look good when you arrive at work in your workout-to-work outfits.

How to keep your clothes fresh in your gym bag

1. Roll your clothes in your bag

It may sound a bit counter-intuitive, but rolling your clothes will actually keep them straighter. Laying them flat on your bag, and gravity will eventually take its toll and leave them with deep creases. Roll your clothes into tight tubes and stack them next to each other.

Folding them avoids deep creases while allowing the possibility of maximising space in the gym bag or suitcase. Folding them up tightly reduces the chances of wrinkles developing due to fabric shuffling when moved. It is very handy with light materials that don’t wrinkle easily, like polyester, for looking neat even after hours of storage.

Additionally, packing cubes or separators can help keep everything organised and compressed, ensuring your clothes remain wrinkle-free until you’re ready to wear them. This simple yet efficient technique is perfect for keeping your work attire looking sharp, whether you’re heading straight from the gym to the office or preparing for a busy day of travel.

2. Make a workout to work clothes parcel

Just like rolling your clothes, making a ‘clothes parcel’ will protect your clothes from creases they may get when they’re packed for too long. Simply lay all your clothes flat and place them layered on top of each other. Make sure you put a stronger item in the middle to act as a core, such as socks wrapped in a t-shirt.

This distributes the pressure, preventing deep folds and keeping your clothes in better condition. The parcel technique is most effective for delicate cloth or items that easily wrinkle, such as dress shirts or trousers. The technique helps retain the shape of your clothes and saves space for efficient packing according to your busy schedule.

3. Wrap your shoes in plastic bags

In order to protect your workout to work clothes from the dirt of your shoes, keep a plastic or recyclable bag in your gym bag and put your shoes in it. This way, you can make the most out of gym bag space without compromising on cleanliness.

For further protection, use a breathable shoe bag that allows good air circulation and reduces moisture buildup and odour. Organising the gym bag so that shoes, clothes, and accessories are held in set parts makes it easy to transition smoothly from the gym to the office without any cleanliness or space issues.

4. Put your socks inside the shoes

Another great idea to maximise space (and minimise the chance of your shoes becoming squished) is to stuff your shoes with your socks. This will also make finding your socks in your bag much easier.

That way, you can use as much space as possible in the gym bag. Things will also be kept neat, so your transition from the gym to the office is hassle-free. It is space-efficient and can be used without deforming your shoes.

5. Put your belt inside your shirt’s collar

A very clever idea to look after your work shirt is to put your belt inside the collar. This will save the collar from collapsing and becoming squashed. It’ll also work as a reminder to not forget your belt at home.

That way, you avoid last-minute wardrobe malfunctions and get to work looking perfectly polished. It also maximises your packing space function and adds utility to your travel routine.

6. Keep silica gel packs and scented sachets in your bag

You know those little white silica gel packets that come in the box with your brand new shoes? Silica gel packets are used to absorb moisture and keep things dry – making them a perfect item to keep inside your gym bag at all times. Silica gel packs will help absorb any excessive moisture that your sweaty activewear may expel, keeping your clean clothes dry.

Always keep one (if not a few) of scented sachets in your gym bag. This will ensure your clean workout to work clothes will smell nice and fresh even if they’ve been packed for a while. Scented sachets also make for a fun DIY project!

7. Keep emergency garments at work

Needless to say, we all forget to pack some essential garments sometimes, and we all become victims of unfortunate accidents like coffee or water spills. As a precaution, always keep some backup items at work, such as socks, a clean shirt, or underwear.

This tiny precaution keeps you equipped with whatever occurs at any given moment so that you manage to look great throughout the day. This might save you some time and stress and help you pay attention to work so you do not get distracted by a wardrobe malfunction. In prep, prep always pays off!

8. Keep a fabric cleaner or freshener at work

We’ve all been there – your protein shake or your shampoo bottle spills in your bag, and suddenly your planned work outfit is not looking as good as it did when you tried it on last night. Keep an on-the-go stain remover or spot cleaner at work for just such a scenario – it’ll go a long way towards fighting small stains.

These quick-fix measures will keep minor spills manageable, and you may save your outfit in minutes. Make it a habit to put a few paper towels or some microfiber cloth on your desk to blot the excess liquid before the stain sets. Preparation will save your look and your day against those unexpected messes!

Workout to work transition

There’s more to getting work-ready than simply having clean, pressed clothes. Here are some work out to work transition tips.

1. Before and after your workout to work change: Take a shower

Clean clothes are important, but dressing sharp is pointless if you smell like freshly-chopped Spanish onions. Keeping your body odour to a minimum is basic manners. Showering after getting out of bed will get rid of any dry sweat or body oils you may have expelled at night time (especially in summer). This will mean your sweat at the gym will be ‘cleaner’ and less strong. After your workout, you should also take a shower to get rid of the workout session’s sweat.

2. Separate your gym clothes

You don’t want everything else in your bag to end up smelling like sweaty gym clothes. Keep a plastic or reusable bag handy to put your gym clothes in when you’re done.

This small feat keeps the odour inside the house and does not pass it on to your other stuff like work clothes, gadgets, or snacks. In addition, a deodorising spray will keep everything fresh, or you can place a small deodorising sachet inside your gym bag. Being adequately prepared with your gear at the gym, separated, with this smelling odour-free, keeps you organised and ready for the rest of your day.

3. Keep personal hygiene items at work

It may be a good idea to keep some basic hygiene items at work to always smell and look good, such as deodorant, dry shampoo, or perfume.
It’s essential to refresh yourself after the gym or even after a long day at the office. A simple deodorant spritz might give you a real self-confidence boost, whereas dry shampoo will revive flatter hair to look like freshly washed hair.

The perfume might be an inexpensive fragrance you will leave behind for your colleagues and clients. That stuff will make huge improvements in personal grooming. Keeping it in the drawer of the desk or your personal space will make your working environment more comfortable and professional.

4. Wear Moisture-Wicking Fabrics

Staying fresh and looking sharp after a workout is easy with the right clothing choices. Wear moisture-wicking fabrics that help you dry off quickly, so you won’t need extra time cleaning up.

Opt for wrinkle-resistant materials, like polyester, to keep your work attire looking crisp without ironing. Layer with versatile pieces, such as blazers or cardigans, to create a polished appearance quickly.

Lastly, choose neutral-coloured tops or leggings that blend well with office outfits, making transitioning from the gym to the workplace effortless.

5. Pick Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics

When selecting your workout wear, opt for fabrics resistant to wrinkles, such as polyester. Polyester won’t easily crease like cotton, making your outfit neat and fresh after a busy day.

This means no need to iron your clothes again in preparation for going to the office. With wrinkle-resistant fabrics, you can feel great and comfortable, whether at the gym or sitting at your desk. It will also save you precious moments in your morning routine so you can stay active while looking great all day long.

6. Layer with Versatile Pieces

Layering with versatile pieces is a clever transition from your workout to work. Blazers or cardigans over a simple workout shirt will instantly dress up. This way, you won’t have to change outfits and will still look great.

You can easily put on a blazer that will make you look professional. This way, you can be sure of feeling dressed up, even if you come out after working out, ready for that meeting or event. It is easy to become fashionable without forgetting anything practical throughout the day.

7. Choose Neutral Colours

Layering with versatile pieces is a clever transition from your workout to work. Blazers or cardigans over a simple workout shirt will instantly dress up. This way, you won’t have to change outfits and will still look great. It is often easy to get ready for work with these workout tops and leggings when you have neutral colours.

Neutral colours such as black, grey, and beige easily match business suits, making it easy to prepare your work attire. These shades fit perfectly with your workout gear and workplace outfit, so you never have to worry about which of your shades goes where in the morning.

Neutral tones bring in a defining polish so you feel great on crazy days that finish at the gym.

Workout to Work – Stay active and look good

There’s no need to compromise on looking good in the office just to make it to the gym in the morning. Stay active and look great with these simple workout to work tips.

1. Invest in Stylish Activewear

It makes all the difference when you wear exercise clothes, especially if you like the outfit for your workout. That gives you confidence and is more likely to make you run to the gym and stick to your fitness goals.

Choose pieces that reflect your style and feel great so exercising is more enjoyable. Investing in fashionable pieces also means switching freely from work to work out and keeping that stylish, fashionable flair all day.

Furthermore, embracing fashionable activewear has transformed many people’s fitness routines and made blending workouts into busy lifestyles easy without sacrificing anything.

2. Lay Out Your Gym Outfit in Advance

Prepare your workout outfit the night before. Such a simple habit negates all possible morning excuses and sets up the rest of the day to follow similarly: active, meaning more likely to stay on track.

Line everything up in one place so you’ve got everything needed—clothes, shoes, and accessories. It sounds like such a small thing, but it saves you precious time and mental energy getting dressed for your workout. You can take your workout seriously and not just scramble to find similar pieces.

Preparation earlier will also establish a positive mindset for the day, and working out for this is much easier while staying committed.

3. Choose Comfortable and Functional Apparel

The right workout clothing will help you achieve the best outcome. Exercise wear has moisture-wicking properties or is breathable and flexible, making it comfortable to wear while performing better. You tend to be cozy, so relax your mind in comfortable clothing, which motivates you and, therefore, provides a better workout.

In addition, active workout wear is multi-purpose. You can go straight from the gym to work without changing clothes; it is that easy. This allows one to be active all day long while still dressing professionally.

While dressing, wear comfortable, well-fitting, functional clothing. You are sure to stay fit and never dress down for style. It all counts with the best workout clothes, from weight lifting to running or the gym to the next meeting. So, remember comfort and versatility for an efficient, stylish day.

4. Treat Yourself to New Gear

Celebrate your milestones by treating yourself to new workout clothes! Fresh gear feels great and motivates you to keep pursuing your fitness goals. Investing in stylish and functional activewear can boost your confidence and make your workout routine more exciting.

You can also purchase high-quality brand new gear which lasts for a long time.

You will get the maximum return on your investment. This treat will restyle your fitness wardrobe and reconfirm your decision to live an active lifestyle.

You can also hope to work out in sparkling new, fit, attractive workout clothes. Well, hello, new gear! Let this excitement about new things encourage you to stay active and involved on your road to fitness!

We’ve all been there – you’ve got a piece of beautiful clothing but, much to your disappointment, it doesn’t fit quite right. Maybe you’re ready to exchange it but you’ve misplaced the receipt. You’re shopping and you find the perfect piece only to find that they don’t have stock left in your size.

Maybe you’ve recently lost weight and want to still make use of your wardrobe full of clothes. Thankfully, there are several easy alterations and tricks that’ll allow you to convert those ill-fitting garments into cherished, tailored pieces.

1. Easy Alterations for pant waist

Easy Alterations for pants

Have you been gifted some ill-fitting pants? Too big, too baggy, but gorgeous nonetheless? Nobody likes to keep pulling their pants up every 4 seconds. Not to mention that some baggier pants are not all that flattering. The trick to crafting those perfect-fitting pants is taking in the waist and rear seam before slimming the legs accordingly. To alter the waistline, all you really need to do is alter from the center-back of the pants. First, you’ll need to remove the belt loop and then measure how much fabric you need to take out. You can use pins to mark the point where the alteration will need to be done and start sewing from there.

2. Long sleeves

While long and wide sleeves are in right now, they aren’t for everybody. They can be somewhat impractical – especially when it gets chilly and you want to put a cosy cardigan on top. So what if the dress or top of your dreams has wide sleeves? Alter it!

The easiest way to cut down a voluminous sleeve is to stitch a continuous line from the armhole all the way up to the opening of the sleeves. It’s important to note that when a sleeve is too loose, it usually means that the armpit is sizeable, too. Start by taking from 1.5 cm all the way up to 5 cm from the underside sleeve seam – from the wrist, through the underarm and into the side-boob seam in order to create a slimmer sleeve.

3. Take in a shirt easily at the side seams

Take in shirt easily at the sides

Have a blouse or shirt that technically fits but just doesn’t look right? That is the perfect candidate for a few easy alterations! Pretty much anywhere a straight seam exists on a piece of clothing, it’s possible to make an alteration. So take advantage of this fact and make that free-flowing, ill-fitting shirt your new favourite.

All you need to do is check that it has a straight seam on each side – the rest is an easy fix. If the blouse or shirt in question has sleeves, things can get a bit more complicated – as you’ll need to fix the underarm area too. Just make sure the shirt has enough space in the underarm to allow for a bit of fabric to be removed.

4. Add darts with easy alterations

Darts are your saviour when it comes to altering a top. Commonly used in blouses, their purpose is to improve a shirt’s fit at the bustline. In the world of alterations though, darts can also be quite useful if you want to shape pants or a skirt. For example, if you’re after pants that actually stay up, darts can be placed over the fullest part of each bum cheek, which is where the most fabric is.

You can also use darts to slim down a baggy jacket. This is especially handy if you have broad shoulders and always need to buy your jackets a size up just so they fit around your upper body. Simply open up the jacket’s lining and add two darts to the back of the jacket. Make sure you start behind the sleeves and work all the way up until you reach the hem.

5. Make a maxi skirt or dress a couple of sizes bigger

Have a stunning dress but can’t seem to make it fit? We’ve all been there. It can be frustrating to know that with only a couple of extra centimeters you’d be able to rock the dress.

Well, there are a couple of tricks that can help with that.

Firstly, the zipper trick. If the dress in question has one of those invisible zippers, then you’re in luck. For those invisible zippers to be installed, there has to be extra fabric – which means, if you remove it, you get those extra centimeters of fabric back, hence making your dress bigger. So, if you don’t mind a regular, classic zipper on your dress then go for it.

If you’re after a couple of extra centimeters on an easy-flowing maxi dress or skirt, you can add those sought-after centimeters to the sides, using the side seams technique. You’ll be adding the extra fabric equally on both sides in order to make it fit well.

Make a little trip to the fabric shop and find one that matches that of the garment you’re trying to alter – the print or colours will depend on your taste, but just make sure the material matches (so if the dress is made of viscose, choose viscose).

6. Shortening Jeans Without Losing the Original Hem

While it sounds impossible to the average DIY-er, you can actually shorten your old jeans without damaging the original hem. Our stylist tailors can perform original hem alterations by first taking your desired measurements. They then fold the leg opening inside out at the exact alteration length.

Next, we will sew the fold with the thread as close to the hem as possible, cut the jeans to the desired length and reattach the hem by sewing the fold back in place.

It sounds a little bit too meticulous, but it helps preserve the distressed and unique detail of your denim hems. This is part of our full range of invisible alterations that preserve the style and character of denim jeans but fit you better as if tailor-fitted to your size.

7. Resizing Jackets for a Sharper Silhouette

Breathe new life into your old and boring jackets by resizing them to achieve a sharper and more defined silhouette. This process commonly involves altering the waist and sleeve sections to your desired fit and body shape.

If the jacket’s side and back seams are a bit too loose, they will be altered and taken in, and the overall fit will be adjusted for a more tailored look and feel that contours your body.

Resizing and altering jackets can also enhance your natural waistline’s flow, creating a more streamlined and flowy appearance. We can also narrow the sleeves and resize them to your measurements, giving your old jacket a modern and sleek look that perfectly fits your wrist.

Waistline, check, wrists, check. With the right measurements, alterations, and techniques in taking in your old jacket, you can turn them from ill-fitting clothes to sick custom-made pieces to top off a layered outfit.

8. How to Fix Gaping at the Bust

If you have a button-up blouse or dress, you must be familiar with this problem. When the garment pulls at the chest area, it creates gaps between the buttons, which could definitely be a bother when you’re outside or at an event.

One easy fix is to reposition the buttons to close the gap or add an invisible snap that provides additional button closure without affecting the overall design. Another more detailed repair should be to alter the darts and reshape the piece to avoid pulling at the chest area.

Either way, you can ensure a flattering and more comfortable fit without compromising the garment’s overall fit and style—something you can always do at home!

Turn your trash into treasure

It can be frustrating when you have an item you like and it doesn’t fit well. Don’t stress, it’s easy to make any garment fit you like a glove. With the 5 easy alterations tricks mentioned above, altering ill-fitting clothes is totally possible.

If you’re not the DIY type and prefer to leave the technicalities to the professionals, find your nearest LookSmart in Australia or New Zealand and have a tailor turn your trash into treasure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! After all, the primary goal of alterations is to adjust a garment’s overall fit and provide a more flattering look that conceals trouble areas. You can also request specific adjustments to various areas, be it the waist, butt, sleeves, and length.

It’s possible to take in clothes that are a few sizes too big, but letting out pieces that are too small may be extra challenging. In other words, larger sizes can be taken in easily, but letting out small sizes will require complex processes and the exact same accuracy, further limiting the alterations.

You may have experienced it: having to sew spandex or knitwear together at home, only to realise it’s pulled between the threads a little bit too much, and now you end up with an altered piece—but for the worse.

It sounds too delicate to alter stretch fabrics. But in reality, you can do so with specific knowledge and techniques for sewing stretchy clothes, which improve the fit and comfort while preserving the item’s strength.

How many times you can keep altering a piece will depend on the type of fabric, the history of alterations, and the overall design. Some pieces will have complicated sewing and patterns that may be ruined if altered a little bit too many times.

In most cases, well-constructed spandex or knitwear may be altered several times, but excessive alterations may compromise the overall fit and quality of the fabric. Hence, we highly recommend speaking with our expert tailors to ensure the best results.

There’s nothing worse than not being able to find the things you need, especially when it means having to rifle through clothes, shoes and accessories. And having an overflowing, unorganised wardrobe just makes it even harder. The first step to decluttering and organising your wardrobe is to take stock of what’s actually there. What do you need, what can you donate to charity and what needs to be thrown away?

The key here is to be ruthless. It’s likely that you only wear less than half of what’s inside. But sometimes we hold onto things because they have sentimental value, or because we’re convinced that one day they’ll fit again. But if you’re prepared to tackle the job, and you really want to get organised, here are some tips for decluttering, consolidating and organising your wardrobe.

1. Empty and assess your cupboard

This may seem extreme, but it’s the only way you’ll be able to see exactly what you own. Take a look at the empty closet space and think of some ways that you could enhance it. Here are some options:

  • Hanging shoe storage
  • Scarf hangers
  • Belt organisers
  • Tie hangers

You can also put hooks on the inside of doors, and if your jewellery or makeup is in your wardrobe, invest in some storage containers. A good jewellery box will not only help to organise the area, but it will also help to protect the contents.

2. Assess the pile

There are many different methods to help you decide what to keep and what to throw away.

Rather than choosing what to discard, the KonMari method allows you to choose what you’re going to keep. The main philosophy is that if the item you’re holding in your hand doesn’t bring you joy, you should throw it away.

This method can be time-consuming, but it’s thorough. If you find that your clothes are bringing you joy, but you’re not wearing them because they no longer fit, be sure to have them perfectly altered so you can give them new life and make the most out of them.

Another way to assess what you’re really using is the ‘hanger method’. This doesn’t involve taking everything out of your cupboard, but rather organising your wardrobe in a way that when you look inside, it’s obvious what has been worn and what hasn’t. This method starts with all your hangers facing the same direction. When you put worn clothes back, flip the hanger so that it’s facing the opposite way. At the end of the month, take a look and see what has actually been worn. Based on this, you can make your decision as to whether or not to keep the items you haven’t touched.

3. Have fun organising your wardrobe

For most people, organising your wardrobe isn’t the funnest thing to do, but there are ways to make it more enjoyable. This is where the Minimalist Game comes in. In this situation, the number of things you need to discard correlates to the day of the month. So, on the first day of the month, remove one item, on the tenth day, you remove ten, etc. Now, obviously a lot of people don’t have this much stuff to get rid of, so the game may only last for a week. Otherwise, you’ll be removing an average of 496 items from your dresser each month.

If you don’t have that many things to get rid of and want to take your time sorting through your things, another route is the One Method. Simply get rid of one thing every day for a month, and at the end of the month, your wardrobe will be looking fresh and organised.

organising your wardrobe

4. Invest in proper hangers and supplies

Nothing makes a wardrobe look more neat and organised than proper hangers and storage boxes. Get rid of every wire hanger and grab some plastic, wooden or velvet ones instead. Your clothes will thank you for it as they’re much kinder to the fabric. Then, for those shoes that need to be stored in boxes, grab some clear plastic ones so you can actually see what’s inside, rather than having to open and shut every box.

5. Everything has a place when organising your wardrobe

The more organised your cupboard, the easier your life will be. There’s no point hanging pants up next to tops and dresses next to skirts, as things will just get mixed up. Designate a place for everything. Hang shirts with shirts, and pants with pants. You can even go one step further and group long-sleeved shirts together and short-sleeved shirts together. This means that when you’re choosing your outfit for the day. You only need to look in certain sections, rather than rifling through the whole cupboard. If you need to, perhaps look at installing some shelves and drawers, as this can help with designating certain spots.

6. Put one in, take one out

This is the perfect way to ensure your closet stays neat and tidy. Whenever you purchase something new, put another item that you don’t wear into a pile. At the end of the month, take this pile of clothes to a charity bin. This not only ensures that you’ll actually wear the majority of the items in your wardrobe, but it will also help you from going back to your cluttered ways.

Making the most of your wardrobe space

Having an organised wardrobe is the key to stress-free mornings and making sure that you’re getting the most out of your clothes. You’ve invested in looking good, so it pays to be able to easily choose and access all your favourite pieces. If you’ve gone through your wardrobe and found that there are a few items that need altering, make sure you pop into your local LookSmart Alterations for a quick chat with one of our tailors.

As a family, having a plan for your clothing budget is important. Kids grow out of clothes super fast, and while it can be tempting to buy the latest gear or the prettiest (but most expensive) dress in the store, doing so regularly and for every kid is simply not sustainable. Yes there are some adorable clothes out there, but when the cost of these clothes cut into the family lifestyle, it’s time to rethink your shopping habits.

Accepting hand-me-downs

Accepting and wearing hand-me-down clothes is a fantastic way to save on the family budget. It’s also a great way to protect the environment by giving clothing a second life. Repurposing old clothing diminishes the amount of energy it takes to make and transport new clothing, and for those that have kindly passed the clothing on, seeing a niece or nephew in a former favourite piece can be very warming.

But of course, hand-me-down clothing can have its problems. The fit might be a little off, there might be a small stain or tear, or they might just be a little old fashioned. Don’t fear though – LookSmart Alterations can help.

A professional tailor can do wonders to any outfit. They can hem it, take it in, or make it look brand new. You might think that doing this will be just as expensive as buying brand new, but we promise it’s more affordable than you might think!

Fixing the little things

Lots of kids clothes have missing buttons or broken zips, but this doesn’t mean they should be tossed away. These are easy fixes that just about anyone can do. As for stains, these can easily be removed using the power of vinegar. Simply soak in vinegar, hang out in the sun, and then run through a wash as normal. To lift mildew stains, mix equal parts vinegar and water with some salt and soak before washing.

Making old stuff cool

Trends come and go, and some clothing you inherit might be a little stuck in the past. If this is the case, make some adjustments to bring it up-to-date. Put new buttons on a cardigan or coat, embellish and bedazzle to add interest, or add pockets using some funky fabric. Use iron-on hem tape to make a cutout lace shape, add a lace trim to a pair of denim shorts, or give tops a new fit by trimming the bottom to make them cropped. You could even turn felt into a bleach stamp pad and stamp on some cool motifs.

Personalising

Sew on an embroidery patch of your child’s favourite animal and even the oldest of jumpers will become a new favourite. If you can’t find a patch, employ the services of a profession embroider to do the job. If your child’s favourite colour is pink, take a white T-shirt and dye it to make it a winner. Alternatively, you could turn it into a tie-dying family activity.

Shopping for used

All of the above still applies when shopping in thrift stores for used kids clothing. Most stores, be them online or local, only sell goods that have been well cared for. Clothing should be free of stains, tears and fading (although mild fading should be expected). Many second-hand stores will specialise only in quality brand names too, meaning your child can be kitted out in the trendiest names for the lowest prices.

Swapping with friends

If you know a friend that’s holding onto clothing for when their youngest grows older, ask if you can borrow. Perhaps you’re in the position to make a trade? Find friends with kids of different ages and work as a team to rotate clothing. This works particularly well for big spend items such as coats, raincoats, shoes and boots.

Waiting for sales

Every time you see a sale, make a note of it so you’re ready for next year. Most stores follow a similar pattern each year, and knowing when the next sale is means you can shop sensibly. This won’t fix the clothing industry issue of energy wastage, but it will mean you never pay full price again.

Making a registry

If you’re worried that an upcoming birthday will mean more toys cluttering up your home, make a registry and ask friends and family to stock up your child’s wardrobe instead. A registry can be a controversial issue, but it’s a great way to get quality clothing that doesn’t cost you a thing. You can always use this saved money to purchase just one toy you know your child will love.

Leading by example

If your own wardrobe is packed full of brand new designer labelled clothing, how do you expect your kids to be happy with hand-me-downs and thrift store finds? Lead by example and alter your existing wardrobe pieces before shopping for anything new. Talk to friends about swapping or rotating clothing, and make the thrift store your first point of call when hitting the shops. Remember, the more you save on the whole family wardrobe budget, the more money you’ll have to enjoy family life.

The right fit can transform your entire look. Tends and brands tend to be fashion’s focus, but professionally tailored clothes can transform any piece into something sharp.

When you buy clothes off the rack, the shape of each piece is designed to fit the general population. You’re unique. To have something that fits you, it’s essential to work with a tailor to customise it to your shape, style, and lifestyle.

At LookSmart, we have experience with high-quality alterations that complement your unique body shape and size. We can also provide style advice and guidance.

In this article, we’re sharing tips on how to measure your clothes to get the perfect fit. Here’s what’s helpful to know.

What you’ll need to measure your size for clothes

You’ll need the right tools to get your correct measurements. Precision is key for measurements and small miscalculations can lead to uncomfortable clothes that feel too tight, too loose, or asymmetrical.

To start with, you’ll need a flexible measuring tape (often called a tailor’s measuring tape) and a stiff ruler to measure parts like your inseam and shoulders.

Tip: If you don’t have a tailor’s measuring tape, you can use a piece of string. Simply wrap it around what you’re trying to measure and hold it against a measuring stick.

Having a mirror is also helpful to make sure the tape is sitting correctly along your body. If you have someone you’d feel comfortable assisting you with your measuring, it can be especially helpful for measurements like your back.

If DIY measurements seem too difficult, don’t worry – we can help. Stop by your local LookSmart store and ask to speak with one of our expert tailors. They can get your measurements right the first time around (saving you hassle and – if you need to fix a mistaken size – money).

How to take body measurements for men’s clothing

Different men’s clothing requires different measurements. For general wear (t-shirts, sports shorts, etc.) taking rough estimates can help you find basic pieces online or in shops that are more likely to fit you well.

When it comes to intricate, detailed work (suits, dress shirts, or pants, for example), you’ll want a professional’s eye and steady hand to achieve the perfect fit for you.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through gathering the rough estimates. Here are the key body measurements for men’s clothing. Don’t forget to keep them in your wallet or phone so they’re handy the next time you go shopping.

How to measure your neck

Your neck measurement is key to a comfortable fit in shirts or jackets. It’s a measurement that is often overlooked, but you’ll be glad you know it.

You can measure your neck by wrapping your tailor’s measuring tape around the base of your neck, where a shirt collar would sit. Keep it snug but comfortable, allowing enough room for one finger.

How to measure shoulder width

Measuring shoulder width might be easier if you have a friend to help. Stand naturally and have someone measure from one shoulder to another, end to end, along your upper back.

If you have slightly rounded shoulders, use a tailor’s measuring tape and lay it flat to account for the natural curve of your back. This measurement is key for getting comfortable shirts and suit jackets that flatter your shape.

How to measure sleeve length

If you’ve ever worn a suit jacket with sleeves that swallow your hands or are uncomfortably short, you’ll know that sleeve length can make or break the look and comfort of your outfit.

To measure your sleeve length, start at the corner of your shoulders and run the tape measure down to your wrist. To get the most comfortable fit, have your arm slightly bent as it naturally would be in your jacket.

How to measure chest size

Your chest measurements are the foundation of a well-fitted shirt, blazer or jacket. If your shirt is too tight, you’ll pop a button; if it’s too loose, you’ll feel untidy.

To measure your chest size, stand naturally and wrap the tape around the largest part of your upper chest to just under your armpits. For a measurement that follows your shape, make sure you don’t have your arms up, as this can affect your measurement.

How to measure your waist

Your waist measurement is important for comfort and confidence. For tailored trousers, measure your waist from your belly button for a natural and stylish fit. If you are measuring for more casual pants or jeans, measure slightly lower where you naturally wear your waistband.

How to measure your seat or hip

Ill-fitting pants in the seat are a quick way to ruin a look. If it’s too tight, your movement will be restricted; if it’s too loose, it will sag and be unflattering.

To find your seat measurements, measure around the widest part of your hips while standing naturally. Make sure you aren’t squeezing or sucking in so you get a smooth and sleek measurement.

How to measure your inseam

Measuring your inseam can help you get a polished look, especially for suit or dress pants. There is some flexibility with this measurement, as you’ll want to determine if you are going for a no-break hem or a classic full break at the bottom of your pants.

Once you know this, you can measure your inseam by standing naturally while someone measures from your crotch to the bottom of your leg. For a classic full-break hem, you’ll want to measure to the point where your pants touch the top of your shoes and create a fold in the fabric.

Four tips for accurate measurements

Your measurements are as useful as your precision. A slight miscalculation can be the difference between a jacket that fits like a glove and one that doesn’t let you stretch your arms forward.

Here are four tips for making sure you are getting the most accurate measurements.

1. Take your time. The most common mistake people make while taking measurements is rushing the process. Take your time and double-check each measurement before writing them down.

2. Don’t measure too tightly. You should have the tape against your skin but not so tight that it changes your natural shape or causes you discomfort. To avoid this, make sure you can comfortably fit a finger under the tape without excess slack.

3. Keep the tape measure straight and level. Make sure your tape measure isn’t twisting at the back or sagging, or it will give you a higher measurement.

4. Measure in the same units. Stick to using inches or centimetres to avoid any sizing mix-ups. An easy mistake to make is reading the wrong side of the tape measure, so be mindful of this.

How tailoring enhances fit and style

Off-the-rack clothing is made to fit as many people as possible, not to look amazing on you. When you start getting your clothes tailored, you’ll have a bunch of pieces that complement your body and make you feel your best.

At the end of the day, it’s all about how your clothes make you feel. You want to be the best version of yourself with confidence and a style you feel is true to you. Whether it’s your once-in-a-blue-moon suit or your everyday pair of jeans, you deserve to love the clothes you wear.

People often think of tailoring as a special occasion thing, or if they need their pants hemmed. Professional tailors can do so much more. They can take an ordinary piece of clothing you’ve had in your closet for months and give it a new lease on life, transforming it into the favourite piece in your collection.

Why quality and fit are more important than brands

One year a brand is at the height of fashion, the next it’s forgotten, until a decade later, when it makes a comeback. Keeping up with the trends can be exhausting.

If you’ve ever noticed how good celebrities look, it’s not just because they wear expensive clothes, it’s that every single thing they wear is tailored.

Even affordable clothes with the right tailoring can look more luxurious and expensive than ill-fitting branded clothes.

At LookSmart, we value sustainability. Altering and repairing your existing clothes or recent purchases is better for the environment and more cost-effective than buying things you don’t love or wear, or falling into the buy-return-and-buy-some-more cycle.

Summing up

The secret to great style isn’t just about what you wear, it’s about how well it fits. Precise measurements are the foundation of a sharp, put-together look, and expert tailoring takes it to the next level.

Fashion trends come and go, but the perfect fit is timeless. Investing in quality, fit, and repairs means your wardrobe will stand the test of time, both in style and sustainability.

FAQs

How do I measure shoulder width?

To measure the width of your shoulders, you’ll need someone to help you. Start by standing naturally and have them run the measuring tape along your upper back from one shoulder edge to the other. You can also visit your local LookSmart store and we’ll be happy to measure your shoulder width for you.

How long does it take to alter clothing?

It depends on the garment and what needs to be done. Pinning and tucking different garments, especially, can vary in terms of how long it takes. For example, a three-piece suit will take much longer than hemming a pair of pants. Quality tailoring takes time, and to save yours, we recommend booking ahead.

You can also enquire about our Express Service. We’ll complete your alterations in 24 hours or less. (Additional charges apply.)

Where is the natural waist on a man?

Your natural waist is a centimetre above your belly button. Keep in mind that this is a great way of measuring suit pants, but for more casual pants or jeans, you should measure your waist where you naturally have your pants sitting.

What’s the difference between measuring yourself and getting tailored measurements?

Measuring yourself can help you get a general idea of your side. However, an expert tailor will account for posture, fabric drape, and adjustments for a precise, custom fit.

When choosing clothing, style is important. A somewhat elusive beast, it’s what gives you your distinct appearance, allowing you to express yourself when attached to a particular environment. Understand what styles, colours and patterns suit you and you’re well on your way to looking great.

But what about fit – is that as important?

You betcha it is.

The most important thing when choosing a shirt is to get the right fit. Gathered in all the right places, it will give you a smart look, a defined silhouette, and the confidence that comes from knowing you are impeccably dressed. The same goes for a great suit – one of the most important pieces in a man’s wardrobe. In fact, a good fit should apply to all clothing, from t-shirts and pants to belts, hats, shoes – just about anything you put on.

So how do you measure for all this?

How to measure your chest

Chest size is determined by measuring around the widest part of your torso, which is just below your arms and across your chest. The tape should be nice and snug, but not so tight that it constricts your breathing. It’s important that you keep the tape horizontal and that you breathe normally when measuring, or you could end up with a tighter fit than planned.

How to measure your neck

To determine your collar/neck size, measure around your neck, just above your collarbone, putting one finger between the tape and your neck. Alternatively you can add ¼ inch to your measurement before rounding up the size to the nearest ½ inch. As a guide, the average man has a collar/neck size of 16 inches.

Measuring Your Shoulders for the Perfect Fit

Measuring your shoulder width accurately is crucial for a perfectly fitting shirt or jacket. That said, a well-fitting piece should have the shoulder seams fall along your shoulders’ natural contours and prevent the fabric from pulling or falling along your shoulders.

Here’s how to measure your shoulder width, straight from our stylist tailors:

  • Stand tall, but entirely relaxed: Ensure that you’re not hunching forward nor backwards and your shoulders are relaxed.
  • Find your natural shoulder points: We mean those bony protrusions—you’ll use those points as references for measuring the perfect shoulder length.
  • Measure across your back, shoulder point to shoulder point: Using a tailor’s measuring tape, measure across your back from one shoulder point to the next, making sure the tape passes over the base of your neck and your shoulder’s highest parts.
  • Ensure the tape is level: When measuring, make sure the tape is parallel to the floor and isn’t sagging—otherwise it could make your piece too loose in the shoulders.
  • Record the measurement in inches or centimeters.

Accurately measuring your shoulder width helps you pick off-the-rack garments that flatter your body shape, or help your tailor create a perfectly-fitting custom or altered piece.

How to measure your sleeve

Many off-the-shelf dress shirts and jackets come in different sleeve lengths, so it’s a good idea to measure for this too.

  • Measure from the top of the centre back, at the nape of your neck to the end of your shoulder at the top of your arm.
  • Bending the elbow, continue to measure from your shoulder to just before the wrist bone, or to where you would like your cuff to sit.

How to measure your torso length

Especially important when buying jackets, torso length determines where the bottom of your jacket will sit. Measure from the bottom of the collar to where you would like the base of your jacket to sit.

How to measure your waist

Measuring your waist is hugely important, unless you don’t mind risking an embarrassing moment revealing those unsightly love handles. To measure:

  • Find the top of your hip bone and the bottom of your ribs. Breathe normally as you do and remove any other clothing or roll it out of the way.
  • Place the tape measure midway between these points and wrap it around your waist. The tape should be snug, but not squeezing on your stomach.
  • Inhale through your nose for a count of three to five. Exhale fully from your mouth, again for a count of three to five. Read the measurement on the tape once you have pushed all the air out of your stomach.

How to measure your inseam

  • Stand barefoot on a hard floor, with your back to the wall. Move your feet approximately six inches apart and look straight ahead.
  • Being careful not to include your man sack, draw a tape measure horizontally from the topmost position between your legs to the floor. If someone could assist you with this it would be hugely beneficial. If you’ve got no one around to help you could alternatively try measuring down the inside of your favourite pair of pants. Lay them flat on the floor and carefully measure the length from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

How to measure your belt size

A good belt can sustain you through years of regular use so it pays to get the measurements right. Don’t just presume they will align with your waist measurements.

Measuring your belt size can be done in one of two ways. The first is to take a belt that fits well (either one you already own or one in a store) and spread it out flat. Make sure the belt is fully extended and doesn’t have any slack. Measure from the base of the buckle prong to the centre hole. If you don’t use the centre hole, measure from the base of the buckle prong to the hole you use most. Depending on your waist size, this number should be somewhere between 30 inches and 60 inches.

The second way involves threading a fabric measuring tape through the belt loops of a pair of good fitting pants. Pinch the two sides together where they meet in front and read the measurement. Add two inches to the measurement to get your belt size.

How to measure your hat size

Every man should have at least one good hat and whether it’s a baseball cap, a fedora, trilby or top hat, knowing your hat size gives you the best chance at it looking great.

To measure your hat size:

  • Place a tape measure around your head about ⅛” above your ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
  • The tape should be firm and snug, but not too tight. If your measurement falls between sizes, round it up to the higher size.

How to measure your shoe size

The easiest way to measure your shoe size is to slip into a shoe store and use a Brannock Device. Measure both the length and width of your foot and measure them at the end of the day when your feet are at their biggest and most swollen.

Measuring for particular clothing

Knowing what measurements you’ll need when buying clothing will help you find the perfect fit every time. A good idea is to keep these measurements written down on a card in your wallet, so that you’ll have them handy every time you go shopping.

How to Measure for a Proper Coat Length

Nothing beats a perfectly fitting coat to layer over your work or casual clothes during the winter time or cold Sydney mornings. A tailor-fitted coat must complement your shape while providing comfort and style.

Here’s how to measure the proper coat length:

  • Determine your desired coat length: Coat lengths may vary, from shorter mid-thigh lengths to longer options extending to the knee or even below. Consider your body proportions, height, and personal style.
  • Measure from your shoulder: Have someone measure from the top of your shoulder blade to your desired coat length, be it mid-thigh, knee-level, or any length in between.
  • Consider your body type: Shorter coats make a short person appear taller, and a longer coat can further elongate a taller body frame.
  • Account for your heels: Should you plan to wear the coat along with heels, consider your heel height when measuring the coat length. You can even wear the heels while getting measured to take accurate lengths. Just make sure the coat is long enough to cover your legs.

Measuring the proper coat length boils down to a length that flatters your figure and perfectly completes your outfit.

When buying a jacket, measure:

  • Chest (note that almost every tailor and manufacturer cuts the chest of a jacket 4” larger than your actual chest measurement, so a size 42 jacket would actually have a measurement of 46” yet it would still say 42)
  • Waist (usually 2-4” smaller than your chest measurement)
  • Shoulder width (from shoulder seam to shoulder seam)
  • Torso length
  • Sleeve length

When buying a suit, measure:

  • Chest
  • Sleeve length (add two inches to your wrist measurement)
  • Waist
  • Inseam
  • Your seat (the widest part of your hips)

When buying a dress shirt, measure:

  • Collar/neck
  • Sleeve length
  • Shoulder width (from shoulder seam to shoulder seam)
  • Chest
  • Waist
  • Torso length
  • Bicep around
  • Wrist around

When buying a casual shirt measure:

  • Collar/neck
  • Chest
  • Sleeve length
  • Waist

When buying pants measure:

  • Waist
  • Inseam
  • Pants length

Reading size charts

Now that you have your measurements, you should be able to find out what size will typically fit you. Take a look at the Australian chart below, and check which column best corresponds with your measurements to identify the size you should order.

Understanding Your Rise Measurement for Pants

Rise measurement is the distance between the crotch seam and the waistband of your pants. This is a pretty insignificant measurement to most people, but for stylist tailors, it determines the overall fit and comfort of your trousers.

  • Low rise: The waistband sits below your natural waistline for low-rise pants. Pants with a low rise usually feels more relaxed, making it perfect for casual styles.
  • Mid-rise: Mid-rise pants have their waistband sitting slightly above your natural waistline, offering more comfort and versatility
  • High rise: High-rise pants typically sit above your natural waistline, close to the belly button. You can achieve a more flattering and slimming effect with high-waist pants, but these fits are often incorporated with women’s fashion.

Common factors to consider for the perfect rise measurement

  • Your body shape: We recommend pants with a higher rise for men with a shorter torso as it helps elongate their silhouette. Taller men with longer torso may also find a lower rise more comfortable.
  • Personal style and preference: Ultimately, it all boils down to your personal style and comfort. Mix and match different outfits and experiment with rises so you know what looks and feels best.

Importance of Measuring Your Thighs for Trousers

Thigh measurements are often overlooked by most untrained tailors. However, thigh circumference is crucial as it can make or break your style. A pair of trousers that are a little bit too tight around the thighs may hamper your walking and feel very uncomfortable and unflattering.

Here’s why measuring your thighs for trousers is important:

  • Minimise discomfort: A well-fitting trouser should not restrict movement and cause discomfort, especially when sitting, walking, or bending. The perfect thigh measurement should give you enough room without feeling baggy wearing the piece.
  • Achieve a flattering fit: Once you nail the perfect thigh measurement, the trouser should gently hug your thighs without being too tight and restricting. Aside from comfort, this should also create a more polished and streamlined silhouette, boosting your style’s overall appeal.
  • Prevent fabric strain: A trouser that’s too tight may lead to premature wear and tear by putting unnecessary strain on the fabric. On the other hand, ensuring a proper fit (particularly around the thighs) helps preserve the trousers’ longevity and fabric quality.

When measuring your thigh, simply wrap a measuring tape around the widest part of your thigh, usually halfway down. Ensure the tape is snug but not too tight or pulling your thigh. Do this properly, and you can guarantee a comfortable and stylish fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prepare a soft measuring tape and a mirror to take an accurate measurement at home.

Start by standing straight and staying relaxed. Measure your chest by wrapping the tape around the fullest portion, keeping the tape parallel to the ground.

Then, measure around your natural waistline just above the belly button. For the hips, place the tape around the widest part of your hips. You will also need to take an inseam measurement from the crotch down to the bottom of your ankle.

For all these measurements, make sure the tape isn’t too tight or loose and that you have someone to help you out if possible.

The following are the most important measurements when shopping for a new suit:

  • Chest: This measurement includes around your chest, under your arms, and over the fullest part of your chest.
  • Waist: Measure just about an inch above your belly button to get your waist measurement.
  • Hip: Aside from the waist, measure around the fullest part of your hips, as this measurement could affect your comfort and silhouette when wearing a suit.
  • Shoulders: Measure from one shoulder bone to the other one across your back, making sure the tape is parallel to the ground and is not sagging
  • Sleeve: Measure your sleeves from the shoulder bone to your wrist, slightly bending your elbow.
  • Outseam: Measure from the crotch seam to the desired pant length to get the outseam measurement.
  • Rise: As discussed in the previous section, this is the measurement from the crotch seam to the top of your trouser waistband.

Follow these recommended steps to accurately measure the perfect sleeve length:

  • Stand tall and relax your arms at your sides.
Have a friend or someone measure from your shoulder bone down to your wrist, following the outside section of your arm.
  • Make sure the elbow is slightly bent to allow for a comfortable fit when bending your arms.
  • Adjust the measurement should you want the sleeves to be a specific length, be it hitting your wrist bone or mid-forearm.

The right and accurate measurements should help you arrive with a perfectly tailor-fitted suit that makes you look polished, distinctive, and professional.

Definitely! It all boils down to adding or deducting a tolerable length to key body parts, such as the chest, waist, or hips. It all depends on your desired fit, but what matters is that you get an extra room without appearing too baggy.

Consider adding about 1/2 to 1 inch for a looser fit, while subtracting 1/2 to 1 inch for a tighter fit. Note that for new and tailor-fitted suits, you should always consider fabric stretching and personal comfort to ensure the clothing doesn’t compromise style and mobility for a good fit.

When measuring your waist for a pair of pants, make sure you stand up straight and relax your stomach. Next, identify your natural waistline which is slightly above or exactly at the belly button.

Wrap a measuring tape around your waist, following the location of the natural waistline, keeping it snug but not excessively tight. Then, exhale and take the waistline measurements—this should help you determine and adjust the measurements to accommodate for your desired fit.

Many of us have fallen victim to an online shopping fail. One brand’s size 6 is another’s size 10. The gown that looked perfect for your big event arrives. However, despite ordering it in your size, it’s loose on the hips and tight across the bust, digging in uncomfortably under your shoulder. You don’t have time to order a new one before the event, so – what now?

For a quick fix, bring that dress to the experts at LookSmart. A few alterations will have it feeling comfortable and looking custom-made.

Before you order online again, however, it’s important to know your measurements. Everyone’s body has its unique proportions. When clothing brands take standard sizing as a gentle suggestion, you’ll need to take matters into your own hands and come armed with your measurements.

In this guide, we’ll teach you how to take your measurements (from bust to hips), understand size charts, show you which measurements matter for different clothing, and explore how tailoring can elevate your wardrobe for a flawless fit.

Common measurements for women’s clothing

Shopping is easier when you know your measurements. Here are the key measurements you’ll need to take.

  • Bust: Across your chest.
  • Underbust: Directly under your bust.
  • Waist: Around the smallest part of your torso.
  • Inseam: The distance from the top of your inner thigh to your ankle.
  • Hips: Around the widest part of your hips.
  • Shoulders: From the outer edge of one shoulder to the other.
  • Arm loop: Around your shoulder and under your armpit.
  • Height: From the top of your head, straight down to the floor.

Shopping according to your correct measurements is the secret to effortless style. The perfect fit transforms how your clothes drape and move with your body. Even a plain pair of jeans with a nice top, if they fit impeccably, will make you look refined and chic.

With a great fit, you have the perfect base to layer on style and personality. Just add jewellery, a bold-coloured bag, and a timeless pair of shoes.

Tailoring 101: How to take your measurements

Knowing your unique measurements is the first step to mastering fit and style. With a measuring tape and pen, you can take control of your wardrobe and ensure that every piece flatters your shape.

Before we begin, make sure you have these three things prepared.

  • A soft measuring tape
  • A notepad or phone to record measurements
  • A mirror for accuracy

When you take your measurements, you’ll want to stand naturally, not suck in, and keep the tape snug to your body but not tight. Wear fitted clothing or measure directly on bare skin for the most precise measurements.

Here are the simple steps to help you measure yourself at home.

Bust

Measure your bust by wrapping your tape around the widest part of your chest, typically in the middle. Make sure the tape is flat along your back.

Modern fitting experts recommend simply using your underbust measurement as the band size to find your bra size. You can take your under-bust size by measuring snugly around your ribcage, just under your bust. You’ll want to round it up to the nearest even number. This can then be compared to standard Australian underband sizes.

Then, using the bust size you previously measured, subtract that number from your bust size to find your cup size (1 inch = A cup, 2 inches = B cup, etc.).

Waist

Find the narrowest part of your torso, usually five centimetres above your belly button. Then, stand comfortably, breathe normally, and use your soft tape to note your waist measurement.

Don’t measure first thing in the morning, as your best fit comes from an accurate, relaxed measurement after you’ve eaten regular meals.

How to measure your waist

Hips

Stand with your feet together and wrap the tape around the widest part of your hips and glutes. Keep it level and snug without causing your body to contort. Use your mirror to check that the tape isn’t dipping down.

How to measure your hips

Shoulders

It helps to have someone you are comfortable with to help measure your shoulders. Measure from the outer edge of one shoulder to the other, following the natural curve of your back. Stand with your natural relaxed posture. Being hunched over or pushing your shoulders back can throw off your measurement.

How to measure your shoulders

Arm loop

Drape the tape over your shoulder and loop it under your armpit. Keep your arm slightly away from your body while measuring. Otherwise, your measurements will be too tight.

How to measure your arm loop

Inseam

Measure from the top of your inner thigh down to your ankle. If you wear heels often, add an extra half-inch to ensure the right length for trousers and jeans. In a pinch, you can use a pair of pants that fit well as a guide instead.

Height

Stand tall against a wall, feet flat, and mark the top of your head with a soft pencil you can easily rub off the wall. Measure from the floor to this point.

Getting expert measurements

When you measure yourself, you want to get it right, as your insights will only be as helpful as your accuracy. To ensure your measurements are right the first time, visit a tailor. Tailors measure people daily and know exactly where to take measurements to get your natural, relaxed fit.

What measurements do you need for different clothing?

Getting the perfect fit is all about precision. Whether you’re curating a work wardrobe or investing in timeless staples, these are the measurements you’ll want to take for every piece.

  • Top: Bust and waist.
  • Blouse: Bust, shoulder width, and sleeve length.
  • Pants: Waist, hips, and inseam.
  • Dress: Bust, waist, and hips.
  • Skirt: Waist, hips, and inseam (optional).
  • Jacket/Blazer: Bust and shoulder width.
  • Shorts: Waist, hips, and inseam.
  • Sweater/Hoodie: Bust and shoulder width.
  • Jumpsuit: Bust, waist, hips, and inseam.
  • Coat: Bust, waist, and hips.

Feeling confident in your fit

The secret to looking and feeling amazing in your clothes isn’t about fitting into a specific shape or squeezing yourself into an uncomfortable silhouette. It’s about wearing clothes designed for your body that allow you to move freely and confidently.

Knowing your measurements helps you choose and tailor styles that fit and feel made for you. Naturally, look for clothes that will fit your body shape well. For example, if you don’t have a wide ratio between your hips and waist, look for pants that work for you, not the other way around.

Don’t force yourself into the pair of pants you wore when you were 18. Go get the pants that will support you through your next stage of life and get them expertly tailored for the perfect fit. The confidence that comes with wearing clothes that fit shows in how you carry yourself.

Refine your wardrobe with professional tailoring

Off-the-rack clothing is made to fit standard mannequin sizes, not yours. That’s why even the most stunning pieces can sometimes feel slightly wrong. We’ve all tried something on and thought it was perfect, except for the sleeve length, bust size, etc.

Tailoring bridges this gap and turns standard-size clothes into pieces that fit like they were designed just for you.

Investing in alterations isn’t about looking fancy, it’s also a sustainable choice. That jacket you haven’t worn in years? A few expert adjustments could bring it back to life, saving it from the landfill. Plus, well-tailored pieces stand the test of time, giving you a wardrobe that lasts season after season.

LookSmart’s expert tailoring ensures your clothes fit like a glove, enhancing your comfort and confidence while extending the life of your wardrobe.

When should you update your measurements?

Your body changes over time, and so should your measurements. Weight changes, strength training, pregnancy, or even changes in age and posture can all impact how your clothes fit.

To avoid size issues, recheck your measurements before investing in key wardrobe staples or tailoring your pieces. Different fabrics and garment styles can also play a role. Structured pieces like blazers require more precise sizing, while stretchy fabrics offer flexibility.

Size charts are supposed to add clarity to finding your size, but – despite this – they usually aren’t consistent. Check the sizing guide from the shop you are buying from first to ensure your measurements match their specific sizing.

Even with a size chart, brands can have slight variations in fit, so don’t rely solely on the number. Focus on the measurements. If you’re between sizes, sizing up and tailoring for a custom fit is always smarter than hoping a smaller size will work.

Lastly, double-check that you use a size chart from the correct country to avoid unwanted surprises. Here is the standard Australian sizing chart to help you determine your size.

International size conversions: Australian to global sizing

Now that you know your Australian size, you can use a conversion chart to compare it to international sizing. Since brands interpret sizes differently, remember to rely on your measurements rather than the number on the tag.

FAQs

How do I know my size when clothing sizes vary so greatly?

Our advice is to always refer to the brand’s size guides. Try focusing less on the (sometimes arbitrary) size you think you are and more on your actual measurements. When in doubt, size up.

How do I correctly measure my bust size?

To measure your bust size (or chest size), wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your breast, ensuring the tape is level across your back. If you are looking to find the size for your bra underband, measure right underneath your bust on top of the ribcage. ou can use this body measurement to help determine your cup size and bra size.

How can decades of experience in tailoring help with my fit?

Decades of experience in tailoring mean a deep understanding of how body measurements and garment proportions affect fit. Skilled tailors can adjust clothing sizes and patterns precisely, ensuring a smooth fit that enhances your body and style. They can also take accurate measurements (from waist measurements to bust size and band sizes).
